It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our mother Gelasia Sanchez. She was born on November 21, 1935 and passed away on December 28, 2024 with her family by her side.
Gelasia (also known as Nicky) spent most of her life as a caretaker. The oldest of nine children, she helped her mother care for and educate her younger siblings. She served as the family and town nurse - many family counted on her in times of medical need. At the age of 19, she married and started her own family. At the age of 28, tragedy struck when her husband died two weeks after their youngest child was born. In order to support her five children, Nicky moved to a large Mexican city to work for a religious organization.
In 1969, she migrated to Detroit where she worked as a judge's maid, and in 1972 she moved to Chicago where she worked as a machine operator at the Wrigley Company. Nicky still found a way to visit her children and parents almost every summer; Nicky made it a priority to frequently get her family together in her parents’ home in Mexico. During the short summer vacations, Nicky made sure to enjoy as much quality time with her family as possible; she also dedicated time to take her kids to medical appointments and to get them ready for the upcoming school year.
In 1972 she met Alfonso; they enjoyed being together so much that they soon decided to spend the rest of their lives together and married. Together they raised Nicky’s 5 children and Alfonso’s nephew whom Nicky treated as her 6th child.
Nicky overcame a challenging life - she was a strong woman and took on additional responsibilities not only looking after her children, but also by serving as a caretaker for many others. Nicky always had helpful advice for her kids, but most importantly she lead by example. Nicky's spirit will live on in all of us.
